Three day North East Film
Festival on the theme ‘Fragrances from the North East’ Commences
Minister for Information
and Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar has said that the Government is fully
committed to mainstream new initiatives in the North Eastern region across
different sectors. The objective was to harness the rich potential of the
region with regards to its geographical and cultural diversity. The initiatives
outlined in the budget reiterated the commitment of the Government in
mainstreaming the North East region. The endeavour of the Government was to
provide all support in bringing about a perfect synergy between talent and
capital across different sectors in the region. Shri Javadekar stated this
while delivering his address at the inaugural function of the three day North
East Film Festival on the theme ‘Fragrances from the North East’ here today (22.08.2014).
Elaborating further, Shri
Javadekar said that the film festival would be a memorable cultural experience
in showcasing the potential of the region in the Media & Entertainment
sector. A testimony to this fact was the increasing number of awards won by the
films from the North Eastern region at the National Film Awards every year. The
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting would always be supportive in
providing all possible support for promoting films in the region. The SRFTI at
Kolkata duly provided a platform to the students of the North Eastern region to
harness their talent in the domain of film making.
The Chief Minister of
Meghalaya Dr. Mukul Sangma highlighted the different initiatives undertaken by
the State Government to build a strong base for film making in the region. He
specifically mentioned about the attractive and appropriate policies being
developed to provide infrastructure to host any international film festival.
Speaking on the
occasion, Secretary I&B Shri Bimal Julka mentioned that all support would
be extended to development of film making in North Eastern region and funds
would not be a constraint. Shri Julka touched upon the creative potential of
the region with regard to young film makers.
The inaugural function was attended by actors and directors from the region, including Manju Borah, Geetanjali Thapa, Oinam Gautam Singh, Mapuia Chawngthu, Alex Lalchhuankima, Abdul Muzid, Tashi Lhamu, Leishangthem Tonthoingambi Devi and Meena Debbarma. The inaugural function
was followed by a cultural evening by PAPON, singer and composer along with his
band ‘The East India Company’. Khawnglung Run (Mizoram), directed by Mapuia
Chawngthu was the opening film of the festival.
A total number of nine
films including seven feature and two non-feature films from the eight states
of North East would be showcased in the three day festival. The other films to
be screened include Sonam (Arunachal Pradesh), Ajeyo (Assam), Phijigee Mani
(Manipur), Ri (Meghalaya), Bamboo Shoots (Nagaland), Going the Distance
(Nagaland), Kathaa (Sikkim) and Yarwng (Tripura). The film festival would
conclude on August 24, 2014, with screening of Pradip Kurbah’s film “RI”.
The screening of the closing film would be preceded by a cultural event that would
see classical pianist Nise Meruno’s performance and rendition of Naga folk-based
choir by ‘Nagaland Singing Ambassadors’.
The other attractions of the festival include
setting up of an exhibition cum sale counters showcasing creative artifacts,
cuisines, costumes and rich cultural heritage of the region. Other highlights
include organizing a quiz on North East and food court in the festival
premises, which serves North Eastern flavours. The open quiz after each
screening on the North East region is intended to raise awareness about the
region among the audience.
The three-day North
East Film Festival is being organized by the Directorate of Film Festivals,
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in coordination with North East
Division (HM) & NEIim, Ministry of Culture.
